Choo- Choy family multi activity week.
The Choo-choy family are new clients of Highpoint, they wanted 3 days of adventure, and they got it!!, a full day of Abseiling in the torrential rain started the week off, we then fell lucky with a break in the weather on Thursday and manag…ed some Rock climbing at Lower Scout crag in the Great Langdale valley, the boys (Joe,15 and Louie 12) are both good indoor climbers, but had very limited outdoor experience, this may have something to do with living in Guildford!! but they took to it really well, we ticked Cubs Arete (S), Cubs Groove (VD) Cubs crack (S), Cubs Wall (VD) and the Slab (MVS), Joe even spied a route of his own he wanted to try, a tricky variation of the Slab which veared left and took in a very tricky overhang up to an arête, he struggled the first time but nailed it the second time, I estimate the route to be an E1 grade, and hats off to him, it was a stirling effort!!, the boys even talked mum (Lynne) into trying a couple of routes, which she nailed!! today was just me and Joe, Louie and Lynne fancied taking it easy at the hotel, but Joe wanted more!! the weather today was wet again so climbing was off the menu, so I suggested a walk to visit the Rydal caves followed by a quick ascent of Loughrigg, the summit was shrouded in cloud so we didn’t hang around long, and headed back down to have a go at Ghyll scrambling! with all the rain we have had I feared the Ghyll would be bursting its banks, making it too dangerous to enter, but we would take a drive down the valley to check Stickle Ghyll out, as feared it was booming down the mountain and I think it took young Joes breath away, but as I had spent a few days with him, and assessed his ability, I suggested we get in and plot a safe route keeping to the edges and give it a go, the water was extremely powerful and I had to keep him on a tight rope a couple of times, but we both made it to the top using a far from usual route, I must admit, it was a little scary at times, but I had total confidence in Joe, and would of pulled the plug if I felt it was becoming dangerous, we skirted the edge most of the way and missed out any of the sections I felt were a little too risky, we topped out in near gale force winds and headed back down to warm dry clothes and drove to Ambleside for a well earned mug of coffee. thanks to all the Choo-choy family for a great week, we made the most of the horrible weather and had the adventure they wanted, hope to see you all again next year!!See More
