ROCK CLIMBING – SARDINIA

ROCK CLIMBING COURSES SARDINIA

Sardinia is the second largest island in the Mediterranean and is roughly the size of Wales (though it’s a lot drier), and like most islands in the Med, it’s interior and coastal strip is craggy, spectacular, and perfect for climbing and for rock climbing courses. In fact, in the last 10 years, many hundreds of climbs have been added to the island – with both sport and trad routes available in abundance from grade 3 upwards. The weather outside the main summer months – from October through to May – is ideal for climbing, and though occasional rain is a possibility, the odds are stacked in favour of warm sunshine. So, excellent and varied climbing (and lots of it), good weather, cheap flights, blue seas and good value food and drink – if there is a downside I haven’t found it yet! For beginners and intermediates Sardinia is one of the finest locations for a rock climbing course.

THE BASE – CALA GONONE:

This delightful region, centred on the village of Cala Gonone, with its small harbour and sandy beaches, makes a perfect base for climbing. There are single and multi-pitch routes in abundance, and a mix of mountain crags and sea cliffs with routes across the grade range from grade 4 slabs upwards. It’s possible to travel out to other climbing areas from here, but most of our climbing will be within a few minutes drive.

THE CONTENT:

We tailor each rock climbing course to suit the aspirations and ability levels of course members, and it’s very helpful that the crags here are well suited to a wide variety of both guided climbing and instructional/coaching. The maximum ratio is 1:3, with 1:2 and 1:1 possible by arrangement. The courses will be led by one of Highpoints Professional guides.

The typical types of climbing and activities available may include:

  • Single and multipitch sport climbing
  • Naturally protected ‘trad’ climbing.
  • Bouldering.
  • Introduction to leading instruction.
  • Multipitch skills + tuition.
  • Performance and technical coaching.

TRAVEL:

Cheap flights are available with Ryanair from Stansted and Liverpool and other flights may be available, but the airport to get to is Alghero. You should book your flight to arrive no later than 4pm.
You’ll be provided with a free lift from the airport to Cala Gonone and out to the climbing areas each day. Please book return flights to depart after 11am.

ACCOMMODATION:

The course price includes self-catering accommodation, guiding & instruction. The accommodation is typically in pleasant apartments, and may involve sharing a twin room. If you require a single room, this may be possible, but may incur a surcharge – please contact us directly about this. You would be free to arrange your own accommodation in the village and receive a discount on the price.

FITNESS & EXPERIENCE:

The course is suitable for beginners and improvers, and is ideal for anyone who has been climbing indoors and wants to try climbing outdoors, for anyone wanting to learn to lead climb and for those wanting to improve technique and push up their standards. You don’t need to be super-fit, but clearly it would be helpful if you can get some climbing done before you go – indoors or outdoors.
